Q: Dear Amadeus,

My dog Homer is a Jack Russell. He is very hyper and runs around a lot. What can I do to make him calm and gentle like you?

  Bobby – Tallahassee , Florida

A: Dear Bobby,

Jack Russells have a lot of energy. They need more exercise than some other dog breeds. Homer will never be as calm as a Great Pyrenees because of the kind of dog he is. Make sure he has plenty of room to run and play. Spend some time each day letting Homer Chase a ball or other toy. By rewarding the behaviors you want, you can turn this energy into training sessions.

Q: Dear Amadeus,

I have a Golden Retriever named Sally. She lets us pet her on the face and head. Do all dogs like to be petted this way?

Ann – St. Louis , Missouri

A: Dear Ann,

You are around Sally every day, and she has come to accept the way you pet her. But, most dogs do not like to be petted on the face or head. In a dog's world putting your hand over their face or head can be interpreted as a sign of aggression. Many dogs react by snapping or biting at the hand. The best way to pet a dog is to approach him from the side, not the front. Then pet him or her behind the ears or under the chin.

Q: Dear Amadeus,

I have a Pug named Millie. She is very friendly. She likes to go on vacation with us and stay in the hotel. When she sees another dog in the lobby, she wants to run right over and play with it. How can I tell whether or not a strange dog is friendly?

Stephan – Great Falls , Montana

A: Dear Stephan,

Always be careful letting Millie approach a strange dog in public. Keep her on a very tight leash until you are sure they will be friends. First, ask the owner of the other dog whether or not his dog is friendly to other dogs. If yes, let them approach each other slowly and watch them carefully. If either dog shows any signs of aggression such as showing its teeth, growling, or snapping, take Millie away immediately. Some dogs are friendly to people, but not to other dogs.
